4 Tipe Conditional Sentence yang Sering Muncul di TOEFL
1. Type 0 (General Truth/Fact)
Formula: If + Simple Present, Simple Present
Fungsi: Untuk general truth, scientific facts, atau kebiasaan. Contoh: If water reaches 100 degrees Celsius, it boils.
TOEFL Pattern: Tipe ini jarang muncul, tapi kalau muncul biasanya di Written Expression section untuk check subject-verb agreement.
2. Type 1 (Real Condition in Present/Future)
Formula: If + Simple Present, Will + Base Verb
Fungsi: Untuk situasi yang possible atau likely terjadi di present atau future. Contoh: If she studies hard, she will pass the exam.
TOEFL Trap: ETS suka bikin trap dengan pakai will di if clause. Remember: NEVER use will after if in conditional sentences!
Common mistakes:
- ❌ If she will study hard, she will pass the exam.
- ✅ If she studies hard, she will pass the exam.
3. Type 2 (Unreal/Hypothetical Condition in Present)
Formula: If + Simple Past, Would/Could/Might + Base Verb
Fungsi: Untuk situasi yang nggak real atau hypothetical di present. Contoh: If I were rich, I would travel around the world.
TOEFL Pattern: Ini adalah tipe yang PALING SERING muncul di TOEFL! Approximately 50% dari soal conditional sentence itu Type 2.
Special Note: Untuk verb to be, always use were for all subjects. Walaupun was juga acceptable in informal English, TOEFL always expect were.
4. Type 3 (Unreal Condition in Past)
Formula: If + Past Perfect, Would/Could/Might + Have + Past Participle
Fungsi: Untuk situasi yang nggak terjadi di past (regret atau menyesal). Contoh: If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
TOEFL Trap: Mixed conditional dan reversed clause order sering bikin bingung.
Pattern Recognition: Cara Cepat Identify Tipe Conditional
Berdasarkan experience mengajar, ini adalah quick method yang saya ajarkan ke siswa untuk instantly recognize tipe conditional:
Look at the Main Clause First:
- Will + base verb → Type 1
- Would/Could/Might + base verb → Type 2
- Would/Could/Might + have + past participle → Type 3
Then Check the If Clause:
- Type 1: Simple present
- Type 2: Simple past
- Type 3: Past perfect

Kunci Jawaban dan Pembahasan
Structure Section:
1. B – Type 1 conditional: If + simple present, will + base verb

Tips Cepat Mengerjakan Conditional Sentence
Dari tracking performance siswa-siswa saya, ini adalah tips yang paling effective:
Tips #1: Hafalkan Formula Don’t try to understand logic behind each type. Just memorize the formulas dan apply automatically.
Tips #2: Focus on Verb Forms 90% kesalahan conditional sentence itu karena salah verb form. Always double-check tense-nya match dengan tipe conditional.
Tips #3: Watch Out for “Were” Di Type 2, always use were regardless of subject. Ini adalah trap favorit ETS.
Tips #4: Never Use “Will” After “If” Ini adalah golden rule. Kalau kamu lihat will setelah if, immediately identify as wrong.
